Galleria PECCOLO: 5 dicembre - 28 gennaio

Raffaella Formenti (Brescia 1955, scientific studies and Accademia di Brera) disrupts the final results of any advertising message, or derails it in a color field. She investigates communication reduced to visual noise, transforming paper into concretions, micro-sculptures or invasive macro-installations. Here expressive range includes different media and materials: paper, the web, photography, video, performance. One constant in her work is the reference to the web from which to draw terminologies and make paper parodies that restore weight and sensory consistency to the virtual entities in which we reset ourselves.
Some of her works (including the Torre Informatica
in 1992, selected by Lea Vergine for an exhibition) are included in the ANS collection at the MART museum in Rovereto, shown in various exhibitions and at the MART itself, including La Parola nell’Arte.
Formenti is a woman of few words, but she writes on the web and in artist’s books, including Lettere dal bordo di un monitor
, in the Memorie d’Artista series published by Galleria Peccolo. Abolishing the dichotomy between painting and surface, I tangle the real without unraveling it, in fact I multiply its confusional surface, so that not even fractals can convey its proportions.”  She can be found on the web: raffo.nita@tin.it       http://raffo-mostre.blogspot.it/

INTERVISTA IN CATALOGO

Federico Sardella

Scardinare sensi

R.F.: Per me ne fa parte, è aprire le porte dello studio.

F.S.: Un po’ come certe tue opere, no?

R.F.: Mi piace come immagine.

Unhinging meanings
A conversation with Raffaella Formenti about her chromatic magmatic fragments

Federico Sardella: Given the title of the exhibition for which this catalogue has been produced, I’d like to start by talking with you about spatial coordinates and the way you move between internal activities, in the studio, and in relation to the outside, the world, and also the web.

Raffaella Formenti: Che N E S O  comes from an awareness of a general loss of coordinates of belonging, making it very hard to feel reassured or even to simply take a path and stay its whole distance. The old geographical reference points have lost their efficacy or been canceled out, in the way of moving physically and in virtual space. When you go from a point A to a point B, you always encounter roundabouts, or a series of obligatory, very quick turns, and if you are not certain about where you are headed they can disorient you. We are all turning around an individual pivot, yet for everyone – at least on paper – that is North, that is East, South, or West; it is thanks to some agreement about the outer coordinates that we have the possibility of staying in balance with ourselves and of communicating with others, after all. For me it is hard to find a geography of belonging that corresponds exactly to the cardinal points of our culture just as we have formulated them for ourselves. There are imposed geographies dictated by questions of survival in society, that have to do with providing a minimum of structure, without which there would be total chaos. But at the same time each of us is fortunately permeated by his or her individual geography, that has nothing to do with the physical compass.

F.S.: Each of us, potentially, has a compass calibrated to ourselves. Some work on it, others tamper with it, others still know nothing of its existence … then at times you find someone who is aware, like you…

R.F.: Whoever speaks your same language of research, and completes or enriches your thinking, is not necessarily someone who shares your same objective reality. We all have the elements before our eyes to construct and complete the puzzle of which we are a part, but we are not always able to recognize them. Some of them cannot be recognized unless we share our thoughts, made tangible in my case through art. Society imposes a loosening of one’s individual geography to be able to survive, but if you agree to put yourself on the line, you are no longer so easy to limit to a precise place. And then, of course, we all have our own concept of roots.

F.S.: What are your roots?

R.F.: In this moment they’re a bit scattered, also because I still can’t seem to make peace with my city (Brescia, ed.), though I cannot help but depart from there and return there. The web, I must say, let’s me feel more geographically settled…

F.S.: Maybe because your roots have become tentacles, at this point, and though you are rooted to your place of origin, with your work and your blog you have reached a wide range of places, physically and virtually.

R.F.: My inner nomadism stimulates my mind more and it does not disrupt my physical stillness as much as I would like. For a long period I have been a devourer of books, in one place, traveling on in my head… In any case, what interests me most in a journey is the human geography, which always wins over the landscape.

F.S.: Your social network page online is a place, a variegated container of information about your work and your artistic path. It offers access to multiple levels and contains many texts, images and information, which you generously share… Can it also be considered an extension of your work, or a work in its own right?

R.F.: For me it is part of the work, a way of opening the doors of the studio. The sharing of what I am and what I know, if it may be of interest to anyone, is first of all useful for me, to make and to grant myself clarity. In the moment when you put something, anything on the page or on the monitor, first of all you come to terms with yourself, and sharing meanings living in the gaze of the other. I am not sure that I say things that necessarily have meaning for others, but if someone finds a meaning it is nice that they can feed on it, just as I feed on the experiences of others, filtering what I see and what happens, in a condition of listening.

F.S.: When you post the image of a work I have the impression that this gesture also corresponds to a sort of desire to file it away. A way of taking a distance from it, of isolating or historicizing it, to safeguard it until it becomes part of other works or other installations.

R.F.: That happens quite frequently. My forms are not always definitive. Like my recent works in the Wikebab_el series, for example, which include multiple associated terms, also in the title: Wikipedia, therefore a democratic archiving from the bottom up, Kebab, a sandwich containing quantities of ingredients whose specifics are not well known, destined to somehow overflow given the irrational form of the container, and Babel. The works also make reference to the “tower” computers of the past, though the use of a similar support, fruit crates from which I remove the sides so they can no longer contain things in a conventional way, but can retain fragments, partly of older works left incomplete or unresolved.

F.S.: The title says a lot about this series of works and their overflowing arrangement. Inside them, among the many ingredients, we can perceive an agreement and a possible structure, or hierarchy. But upon closer examination, this possibility soon vanishes, given the impossibility of finding a foothold or isolating a fragment.

R.F.: In spite of its flimsiness the support isolates the elements to make them legible, though with all the difficulties of the situation, since these works gather overflows of my thought that have surrendered to the impossibility of being bridled.

F.S.: Were you considering an initial attempt to put things back in order, given the choice of the box as backdrop? Or is this choice of using an explicitly “incontinent” container confirmation of the impossibility of containing you?

R.F.: This work too is a Che N E S OWikebab_el confirms the impossibility of assigning a single order to the elements, and offers nourishment inside which each person can select favorite ingredients that, also in visual terms, catch their attention most, to the point of offering the possibility of finding a key to begin a voyage inside. Instead, the magma of the Wikiscraps does not seek channels and eludes any precise formalization or certain geography. So the difficulty lies in finding the instant in which to stop myself and put down the brush, in this escape of mine from defining a form at all costs, which I would prefer to resemble an organic-molecular germination in progress.

F.S.: So these are open works, then? Or eternally in progress?

R.F.: You can tell that I adore worksites? Many people are irritated by works in progress, but I think they are fascinating. The signage has a particular color scheme and has to do with places of with indefinite features, in which changes are taking place. The red nets they use to fence off construction sites are like crayon traces in geography, which closely correspond to our now. Pauses of the gaze, without the rigidity of a building, always containing accidents or incidents that transform them. Often instead of being transient they stay there for years, fading in the sun.

F.S.: A bit like some of your works, no?

R.F.: If you don’t put them in direct sunlight my works don’t fade! But they are definitely events of mutation, like worksites. At times I am presumptuous enough to think that my works are like philosophical notes. I am also interested in the formal aspect of the piece, but above all I want the works to be read as philosophical input, as far as my way of reflecting is concerned, though without great rigor, and where everything can be disrupted, not definable and not definite, aimed at communicating my flow in continuous rewriting.

F.S.: So at this point your works are a way of jotting down doubts?

R.F.: They are chromatic magma fragments where color is free in space. My canvas is not a circumscribed place and the works of moments of painting liberated from any surface. And this is a certainty, rather than a doubt! Though doubt does lie at the base of the reflections that lead to my work.

F.S.: Your palette is the world. Your paint tubes are anything on paper that has to do with advertising, communication, packaging and packing. What interests you most about these scraps?

R.F.: I don’t like the idea of generating something that refers only to me. Instead, I like the idea of transforming what has already belonged to the gaze of others. This is why it is inevitable for me to bring the world into my studio, or to be sure that wherever I go I can find materials for working. I reposition and decontextualize. The present way of life has put everything into sectors, removing the original meaning of many categories of endeavor. For many people being an artist today is a profession like any other, and it no longer has to do with the alchemy of transformation of materials itself, as a place of travel and dialogue, whether the materials are paint, metal or paper.

F.S.: Do you consider yourself a modern-day alchemist?

R.F.: I like the image. I make shifted use of materials. The same is true of words. I like to unhinge them and I do it because it is not enough for me if they have just one meaning. And even if a certain word already has three detailed dictionary definitions, I am not satisfied and I want to see a fourth, a fifth, a sixth… to the point of reaching the surreal, as long as it opens the senses. Adding another key to the set, complicating it and expanding it. Is that also alchemy?

F.S.: Like you, the alchemist connects the elements.

R.F.: When art talks only about itself and refers only to itself, it becomes a meta-language that wheezes to itself, a sort of separate playground with respect to life. I think it is interesting to open doors between different spheres, science, sociology… to not impoverish or isolate the language in a ghetto, to connect myself with different realities from the specific one that focuses on art. The materials I choose are linked to communication and the gestures of ordinary people, simple things I use to say something more complex, with multiple levels of interpretation. I connect, but at the same time I take apart: just imagine me spending time folding things, like a madwoman. Actually I couldn’t repeat the same gestures for very long were it not in pursuit of a precise project I have in mind, that can only take form in that way. Each time, in this gesture of folding I find the beauty of seeing something change, and the graphic design of the poster, created with a different intention, is disrupted by my action, which in the end is not so different from certain repetitive gestures that belong even to the most rigorous painters… When I fold I paint: I mix the colors, I gauge the bulk, I juxtapose forms, in a flow of consecutive notations that settle in layers. When I fold it is not my gesture that crosses the paper, it is the paper that follows my gesture, detains and continues it.

Arte e dirottamenti

Art and detours
Raffaella Formenti, between order and chaos

Raffaella Formenti is a very complex artist. She is inter-textual, multi-faceted, erudite and simple, extremely communicative yet hard to grasp. A person who creates and reflects, who constantly wonders about the meaning of what she is doing, yet does not get paralyzed – as happens to many others – by this incessant questioning. Her thinking can at times seem contradictory, but that is the result of absolute consistency: the recognition of the “borderline,” the constant wavering intrinsic to our condition as specimens of Homo sapiens sapiens.
Raffaella Formenti’s works exist in their alternating presence between chaos and order, pursuit of coordinates and the admission of the impossibility of finding them. Her motivation, or what urges her to be an artist, asserts and denies itself at the same time: the desire to send messages and remain in the memory of others conflicts with a sort of aspiration of concealment, a self-critical retreat from an exaltation of the subject. The rejection of an excessively “esoteric” production technique, hyperdeveloped and transcendental, and the use of a “minimum” material belonging to everyday reality (mostly advertising posters and promotional brochures), also correspond to the intention of bridging the gap that separates ordinary people from artists, approaching the others and maybe even getting lost in the crowd, though without sacrificing an “eccentric” viewpoint (in the etymological sense of the term).

The paradox of Raffaella Formenti is the same one that emerges when one attempts to write about her. In Socratic terms, that act would be almost superfluous; of course it is limiting, because her work is so rich – in content, meaning, infinite implications – that it would run the risk of leading, from reflection to reflection, towards the imponderable and the epoché. As in a story by Borges, as in a labyrinth that borders on loss of the mind, on surrender in the face of what cannot be grasped.
Yet it is necessary to write about her: impossible to classify par excellence, Formenti ought to be fixed in a definition; which will be imperfect, in fact immediately inadequate, but can serve to make the importance of her position perceptible, which would otherwise run the risk of escaping us. Then everything would seem to be simply playful, colorful, spontaneous! Beneath this almost playful surface lie dizzying realizations, philosophy in the most proper sense of the term. Even the divertissements and calembours – so frequent in her work – become cognitive tools, keys for a comprehension of reality; or, more precisely, comprehension of its incomprehensibility.

Basically, the innermost spirit of Raffaella Formenti leads her towards conceptual art, using that term in a meta-temporal perspective, not linked to a given historical period or circle. American scholars lost in the often idle question of interpretation of the contemporary in terms of modernism vs antimodernism would probably not know where to put her; but we are in Europe, and we can use the words without fear, aware of their multiple meanings and the fallibility of any reductionism and all deductive methods. We start with observation and analysis of what exists and then we derive, when we are able, an interpretation, a theory, a key. Not vice versa.
“Conceptual” means that the technique of making is not an end in itself, but inextricably connected to the moment of invention, with reflection on the “language” utilized and on communication. It also means that the content developed by the mind is not incidental, extrinsic or residual, but an integral part of the work, which is not reduced to its mechanical making. And to think that the installations of Raffaella Formenti, her “foldings,” seem almost to generate themselves, to sprout, to spring one from the next as if in an automatic and unstoppable process, a reaction of proliferation! Instead, there is aratio behind them. A ratio that incorporates not a few elements of irrationality, it is true; but that is eminently humanistic, simply human, in fact.

We were saying that by folding Raffaella Formenti creates worlds, structures: both “philosophical” objects of small size and accumulations that invade space. This is the case of the installation Che N E S O. Quali Nord Est Sud Ovest, which announces out loud the lack of consistency of any outlining of circumscribed geographies, given the fact that they would immediately turn out to be impossible to implement, because not shared, not sharable: just consider the fact that the atlases used on different continents place their own at the center of the globe: Europe, Asia, the Americas. In short, we cannot even agree on the orientation of planet Earth, on how to conventionally represent it on a sheet of paper. When everything becomes magma, which is not relativistic with respect to ethical values, but to the gnoseological faculties of man, in the face of this our thoughts are con-fused, and the folds of Raffaella Formenti multiply, expanding the surface of the world, making it even more jagged and less legible (it is an anti-geography, that states the non-measurability of reality, the impossibility of encoding it, labeling it, getting it under control), and then they rise and become concrete in stalagmites.
I am reminded, by analogy, of that lucid and organized folly we find in certain act finales of the playful operas of Gioachino Rossini, when the characters, faced with situations they cannot control, with «nodi avviluppati» (snarled knots), allow their disconcerted minds to freely soar in the aether: then bells toll in the head, and dazed brains go «sossopra» (upside-down) and are «presso a naufragar» (about to go under).
One of the most subtle and intelligent paintings of Wassily Kandinsky comes to my aid,sub specie of metaphor, namely FugeBeherrschte Improvisation from 1914. The title translated in English sounds – not very nicely – more or less like this: Fugue, controlled improvisation. It seems like an oxymoron: the fugue is the rigorous musical form par excellence, based on clear and “mathematical” rules; improvisation is the exact opposite, as can be intuitively understood. Kandinsky seems to be telling us, in this canvas, that the principle of encoding and ordering rationality runs up against – or in any case must come to terms with – freedom, with that flair that cannot be coerced or predicted; it tries to tame, to control, the somehow channel the improvising ethos, but in the end it truly cannot do so, and the two elements remain in opposition, solid, not amalgamated.
This battle also happens in the art of Raffaella Formenti, though with different premises and results, and with the clear awareness that it is lost – or won, depending on how you look at things – from the outset: the efforts to be systematic and to reorder things succumb in the face of knowledge of the kaleidoscopic multiplicity and unintelligibility of the real, which is better armed with esprit de finesse. Analytical intelligence and logic, in fact, paradoxically lead to the overtaking of classifying rationalism, immediately making clear – for example – how the adoption of a single viewpoint is disputable: to get down to a practical level, we need not hesitate to say that even hanging a work on a nail at a particular angle, in one direction or another, compromises all the ulterior possibilities of observation and configuration of the object, which would otherwise be infinite.
Every concretion of folded paper that emerges from the hands of Raffaella Formenti is one and one hundred thousand. Yet the dimensions are theoretically unlimited (only the mere necessities of the material indicate the point in which to stop and consider the work finished): in abstract terms, nothing would prevent these works from expanding like mosaics, to the point of invading the entire universe, given the fact that the QBXL modules she has invented interlock with each other ad libitum and in a perpetuum mobile; a bit, by way of resemblance, like when one loses (lost) one’s way in libraries, reading a book in which another book is (was) mentioned, which then leads (led) to another book, and so on. Today this rarely happens, since in the web every “search” influences and circumscribes the next one, contributing to create many separate worlds, each in the image of the individual, in a solipsism of mutual incommunicability.
Raffaella Formenti, a conceptual, humanist, European artist not afraid of complexity, not dumbfounded by the inevitable aporias of critical thought, takes us metaphorically back to those libraries, giving us back the taste for testing our intelligence and sensitivity, of getting lost in knowledge that continuously prompts and stimulates itself, while knowing she is facing an impossible challenge; but not a losing battle, anything but. History, in fact, will prove her right, and those like her. Or at least we can hope it will.

2) I COLORI

4) I VUOTI

In the shady glossy folds of time.

1) FOLDS

If Raffaella Formenti drops by to visit, she may / have strips of paper cut from some advertisements in her inner jacket pocket. While chatting, without even looking, her hands get busy folding the papers and fitting them together. This manual movement has become second nature, but it also corresponds to a flexible, open system. Unlike what happens in an operation based on completely or even generically pre-set parameters, like weaving a rug, for example, Formenti starts with an initial mother structure and then improvises, without knowing where it will end. It is like a sensor of the available time and space. Like a tautological radar, it irradiates the perceptible and mental zone she develops under her hands as they work. As a technique, she has invented countless variations of a very personal origami with which she makes things that range from small objects to creations occupying entire rooms.

The glossy paper of advertising has a rigid yet flexible consistency that allows her to fold it in simple formations that become matrices of complex compositions. The measurements of the folds vary infinitely and lead to a different effect each time. While in the Japanese tradition of origami the folding of the paper is studied to generate recognizable forms, like a stork, a bear, a house, a mask or a vase, Formenti’s folds construct works of architecture that do not intentionally represent images of phenomenal reality. They take form in real space and modify it with their unavoidable presence.

Even a single small cube with one open side, formed by a folded strip, occupies and absorbs the place in which it is put, so it can no longer be overlooked once it has been placed there. Its weight, just a few grams, transcends the proportion of its volume of fullness and emptiness. The edges of the form are either solid or reveal themselves through the layering of one fold over another. The glossy surface of the paper produces reflections of opaque light that move as the observer moves. We should remember that this object, the banal little cube of folded paper, for example, is an object that has no intrinsic meanings. It irradiates innumerable meanings in a thousand directions and layers of context.

2) COLORS

The papers Raffaella finds are used for advertisements of all kinds. They can be torn from magazines or leftovers from a company that does posters and billboards, Pubblix in Brescia, the city where Formenti lives and has her studio. The stiffness of the paper varies, allowing the artist to obtain vertebral constructions that can even extend in overhangs of exceptional length.

The papers have colors chosen by the designers of the advertising. The artist can choose to use just one, to produce an object dominated by the hue of one poster, or she can mix multiple tones from different papers to generate complicated three-dimensional mosaics.

With few exceptions, the chromatic effect is not designed in detail, but springs of the inevitably random combination of the folding of what she happens to grab, when one of the prepared fragments comes into play. The aesthetic choices start at the beginning, already in the choice of the sheet and the proportions of the cutout pieces. A strip five centimeters wide produces different formations than one with a width of fifteen.

Significant differences arise, depending on which fragment is used and at what point in the creative process it is introduced. For example, an entire construct could be made by starting with just the monochromatic left side – fluo yellow, for example – of three copies of the same poster, while once the construction has begun the further additions could instead be extracted from the central part, crowded with large black letters against the same yellow background. This would lead to perceptible shifts of color.

Formenti chooses the colors by taste and also to feel that they are suited to the dimension she is seeking. Her color choice is both random and intentional. It responds to the instinct of the painter who makes a form correspond to a color without wasting time to explain the connection to herself. Once, in a gallery in Desenzano del Garda, she chose to make an immense floor-to-ceiling tower of yellows, reds and blacks, in contrast to the institutional white of the rooms. She then added small satellite constructions of a different nature. Some contained parts that could be moved or pulled out, outlining mutable coincidences of color, form and legibility of the words.

3) WORDS

The associations that trigger Raffaella Formenti’s constructions are not just architectural and chromatic, but also often reflect the radical importance of typographical characters and letters.

Walking down a street with Raffaella causes an intense heightening of the capacity to observe and to make connections. She does not refrain from expressing her interpretation of what you see. She whispers or announces these thoughts as you walk. The banal messages of fabric or appliance stores are sliced, combined, jumbled in anagrams, or read vertically to make them into conglomerates of totally unexpected sounds and meanings that suddenly make the messages interesting. If you are seated at a bar, the passage of a van with the name of a plumber or a laundry service might prompt her verbal twists. Her mind never stops. Just imagine what happens when she gets to the newspapers and magazines packed with semiotic conventions, whose archaeology cannot help but plunge you into desperate ironic skepticism.

It’s in words, letters, phrases and messages that are often empty yet sound important that the artist discovers the tragedy and humor of life. She crosses the entire system of communication with the critical filter of her gaze. Her mind itself is a sculpto-painting even an unsighted person can perceive when it transforms into touchable castles of paper someone can read aloud for their benefit.

Her works are fragile yet very solid: they don’t collapse, at times you can even lean on them, though just one match can send them up in smoke. This is one of the many branching contradictions on which her art is based – symbolic contradictions of our entire life. We build grand castles of thought and action, eroticism and sadness: each of our lives is a very rich universe of hopes and memory, but a gust of wind can erase it all.

4) VOIDS

Those capable of reading architecture know how to see the void that is integrated with the fullness; those who listen to music know the aesthetic pleasure of the silences that alternate with periods of sound. The invention of the collage at the start of the 20th century triggered reduced, flat forms, gathered in an apparently random way in the baroque three-dimensional structure of the formation of images. A pondered alternation of full and empty took on pregnant weight in modern art from the end of the 19th century, also through the influence of the use of emptiness in architecture and Japanese calligraphy, recently discovered by Europeans.

The void is of central importance in Formenti’s work. Her art functions by means of alternation not only of volumes and spaces but also of legibility and illegibility, skeptical irony and lyrical inspiration, being and non-being, in an eternal, endless zigzag. When I look at one of her works I have to not only observe the tactile part; my perception is enriched if I also go in search of the negative space, of what is not there.

The fragments of words that are recycled in new phrases are not traces to help me reconstruct the original words from which they were extracted, but sensors that stimulate me to seek other visual and verbal paths I had not previously imagined. Amidst the folds of the paper the folds of thought lie hidden, at times literally, as when a word in the foreground is reflected in another hidden in the shadow of the inner alcove formed by four walls of paper.

The collage is the true artistic revolution of the modern era. No work exists that I can decode without moving along the lines of its concept: putting one thing together with another produces something else, and the interpretations of the work are not tied to the artist, though he or she may want to explain them, but are infinitely open. Formenti’s work is the most extreme extension of the concept of the collage: it starts with the juxtaposition of incongruous elements and reaches the temple of logic and emotion. Whether she likes it or not, her operation takes art to a sacred field.

The inexplicable folds of Raffaella Formenti are but one of the facets of her versatile activity. The combination of images, colors and lettering happens in her universe in many other ways, in books assembled in the computer and then digitally printed, in photographs that are manipulated and retouched, in video recordings, even in text messages sent to the mobile phones of friends.

The flood of her imagination, surgically precise and at the same time unleashed, can be checked in the case of flat or cybernetic works, but it becomes a problem in the case of the paper constructions. Her house has been invaded by them. When the question of storage arises, the void that in each of them is symbolized by the delicate shadow zones gets swallowed up by the irrepressible frenetic activity of the artist. Her apartment is packed with constructions. There is something utterly romantic about this feat of endlessly multiplied visual thinking. It becomes the extreme symbol of the place of art in our society, whose debris is reconstructed in grand cathedrals, eminently useless yet indispensable.
